The power steering pump is also called a vane pump. The crankshaft plays an active role in driving this, using a pulley and a belt. It helps in turning the steering wheel by pressurizing the hydraulic fluid. If it breaks down or wears out, you will observe:

  • Whining noises from the car when you make turns
  • The steering wheel becomes less responsive and stiff
  • Squealing noises when you try to ignite the engine

If you continue to drive without getting the power steering pump repaired or replaced, your car’s performance will get more and more affected. The average lifespan of power steering pumps can be as long as you own the automobile. But most of the time, they break down at around 125,000 kilometers or even sooner.
