Timing Belt

Often called a cambelt, a timing belt is a component of an internal combustion engine that synchronizes the rotation of the camshaft and the crankshaft. In an automobile, a timing belt plays a crucial role in controlling the valves and pistons.

Symptoms of a bad or failing timing belt are:

  • Oil leak near the motor
  • Exhaust issues
  • Tickling noise from the engine

Regardless of mileage, the average life of timing belts distributed by the manufacturers is between 90,000 and 150,000 miles (or 7- 10 years). Replacement of these belts can incur several thousand dollars.
